چکیده

Group communication is a useful abstraction in the development of highly available distributed and communication-oriented applications in wide area networks (WANs). The most important aspects of this abstraction are the dynamic maintenance of group membership and its diverse semantics for interleaving membership change notiications within the ow of regular messages. In this paper we propose a new architecture for a scalable group membership service for wide area environments. Our architecture provides two diierent service levels and their semantics, each geared to diierent applications with diierent needs: The congress membership service which provides simple semantics of membership approximation, and the moshe service, which extends congress, provides full virtual synchrony semantics. The novelty of our design is in its client-server approach, which allows lightweight clients to beneet from advanced membership services. Furthermore , our design supports the coexistence of full-edged clients along with thin clients.

Reliable Synchronization Support and Group-Membership Services for Distributed Multimedia Applications

In this paper we propose a communication software architecture designed to support distributed multimedia applications. In particular, we describe algorithms and protocols that implement reliable synchronization support and group-membership services for those applications. We show that these protocols provide all the non faulty application components with a consistent view of the group membersh...

CONGRESS: connection-oriented group address resolution services

The use of a high bandwidth multicast is becoming widespread in today's network applications. Many of these applications use multicast groups with dynamic membership such as multi-media conferencing, multi-media broadcasting and multi-media distributed data bases. ATM UNI 3.1 and 4.0 protocols o er the point-to-multipoint connection type that enables multicast over native ATM. Point-to-multipoi...

Scalable and fault-tolerant key agreement protocol for dynamic groups

With the widespread use of the Internet, the popularity of group communication-based applications has grown considerably. Since most communications over the Internet involve the traversal of insecure networks, basic security services are necessary for these collaborative applications. These security services can be facilitated if the authorized group members share a common secret. In such distr...

Hierarchical Mobile Wireless Network (HMWN)*

Ad hoc networks may not be suitable for “non ad hoc” applications due to resource, mobility, traffic pattern and incompatible wireless MAC protocols issues. We propose the Hierarchical Mobile Wireless Network for providing flexible and scalable network services to these applications. In such a system, mobile hosts are organized into hierarchical groups. Four basic operations that are used to se...

GMAC: An overlay multicast network for mobile agent platforms

The lack of proper support for multicast services in the Internet has hindered the widespread use of applications that rely on group communication services such as mobile software agents. This kind of applications, although do not require high bandwidth or heavy traffic, need to cooperate in a scalable, fair and decentralized way. This paper presents GMAC, an overlay network that implements all...
